Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, developed and published by Sega for Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear. It was originally released in December of 1991, both to the Japanese and the American/European markets.
Sonic the Hedgehog is not a port of the original Genesis game but rather a reworking, with much the same gameplay, half of the old levels intact and several new
ones. The game was re-released as part of Sonic Mega Collection Plus and was also a hidden minigame in Sonic Adventure DX. It is considered by many Sonic fans, to be one of the best (and most underrated) 8-Bit games of all time. The music
was written by acclaimed composer Yuzo Koshiro.
